Workshop Summary
By: Amanda Caballero
This workshop is a workshop you would not want to miss! Corrinne Lockamy gave so many educational tips that can be used daily. In the beginning of the workshop she spoke of Cover letters verses Resumes.
What is a cover letter? A cover letter is a letter of introduction, they send this when they are sending any applications to jobs or school grants. What do cover pages have to include? They have to include details about yourself that make the reader want to read your resume even more. What is the purpose of the cover letter? It show the reader the connection they have with you and if you are the right person they are looking for. The cover letter will portray your communication skills and writing skills. It will show the employer that you are the right fit. How do you make a Cover Letter? When you are starting your page, make sure to have your letters single spaced and paragraphs double spaced apart. Always use business letter format to be more professional. Remember to keep your letter brief and relevant. Its great to have a draft cover letter but make sure to tailor your letter to the company or job you are applying too. Always sell yourself, be your own spokes person! The manager who reads your letter will love to see hat your qualifications match what they are looking for. When you finish your cover letter, make sure to proof read your cover letter. Have other people read your cover letter as well. Even if you think its good, maybe someone with more knowledge can make it even better. You never want to send in your cover letter using wrong grammar or misspelling. It will show the job that don't have the greatest writing skills and you should not want that! The structure of your cover letter is also very important. Keep your cover letter short, around 3 to 5 paragraphs. Just like essays we have a topic sentence that will grab the readers attention, Your cover letter should be the same! Your first sentence should grab the employer's attention. They should know before they read anything else what position you are applying and why you want that position. In the middle paragraph, you develop a theme by showing example of your skills and qualification. Lastly, In the last paragraph, you should request an interview so the employer knows you are very interested in the position and opportunity.
What is a resume? A resume is a document that is full of different facts about yourself like your strengths and some history about jobs or internships. Resumes are sent to jobs daily and they are always needed. Your resume should be filled with past experience, skills, education, and achievements. Always remember to stay truthful on your resume. A good resume should be clear, concise, consistent, and focused. Always make sure to include these skills in your resume: Education, Coursework skills, Computer skills, Leadership skills, Projects, Internship and Co-Curricular Activities. This resume will really sell yourself to the employer. The cover letter and resume are a great way to lead you into the perfect job.
I hope you enjoyed these amazing tips about Cover Letters and Resumes summarized as much as I enjoyed this workshop by Corrinne Lockamy! These two documents are always needed and can lead you to great opportunities.
