Chapters 3,9 and 10 reflection by Angela Acevedo

After watching the presentations, I can honestly say that I have a better understanding of what I am going to be learning from this class. At first glance, the things in these chapters seemed basic and common knowledge but I was wrong. Chapter 3 talked about intercultural communication and went into depth on how to not only interact with people who share different values, but how to effectively work and communicate with people who are basically from a different world. I am sure that we would all like to believe that we are being as open and welcoming as possible to everyone but that may not come as easily for people who have never been around anyone different from themselves in their lives. We not only learned about people’s religion, disability, and identity, but we got a better understanding of it. And by properly defining these differences, we can define our similarities.       In chapter 3 we learned the differences in people individual...

Christopher Falcon and Armando Abud's Reflection of 3, 9, and 10

SPC1017-2215-2990 Reflection: Chp 3, 9 , & 10 ➵Christopher Falcon In such a diverse world we are to notice how many different cultures are represented by the different types of people around us every day. In a culture people are brought together through their values and beliefs. When an outside person enters a unfamiliar culture they can experience culture shock. The outsiders or people visiting from a different country are not use to the dominant culture that is presented in that specific culture. Not only is this because the person may not be use to that setting and their traditions but also because of ethnocentrism. Traveling in groups is a way to prevent the risk of feeling uncomfortable in a new environment due to the fact that you are surrounded with people that are familiar to you that will keep you grounded. The anxiety given from culture shock can also be reduced through group communication. Being able to talk about the difference between what the person is use to co...

Summary for chapters 3, 9, and 10

Summary for chapters 3, 9, and 10 by Geovani Hoyos   Chapter 3 went over intercultural communication. It talked about culture in general and how intercultural communication involves interactions that occur between people whose cultures are so different that the communication between them is altered. It also went over both dominant and co-cultures in society and how it is a shared system of meaning exists within the dominant culture, but meanings can vary within co-cultures based on race, ethnicity, sex and gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, age/generation, and disability.Lastly, chapter 3 goes on about how to become interculturally competent and that we need to acknowledge and overcome common intercultural communication barriers. We also need to employ the competent communication strategies of acquiring accurate knowledge, adopting an appropriate attitude, and developing culture-centered skills. Chapter 9 went over communicating in groups. It defined...

Chapter 3, 9 and 10 Reflection by Diana Palacio

Communication plays a significant role in our lives; we live in a diverse world where we have to interact with a different type of cultures, sometimes it is hard to communicate with people that it is not the same as you or does not speak your language, mainly when you are working in groups, thanks to this three chapters we learned how we could improve intercultural communication and much more. Each type of culture differ from others; there is dominant cultures, co-cultures, and cultural identity these three different type of cultures helps individuals identify to what cultural group the person they are interacting with belongs, some cultures are going to affect intercultural communication like low content culture and high context culture, it can become challenging to build a good relationship with this two cultures, but it does not mean it is impossible. When belonging to a healthy group, communication and interaction seem easy. Healthy groups can be either independent, cohesive,...

Chapters 3, 9, 10. reflection

After reading the chapters and listening to the presentations that we made in class, I have learned a lot about the communication, and everything involved with it. In the first presentation I learned how the communication how the communication is related with culture and how important is to understand cultures in order to communicate better and how the cultures can be modified through communication. Things like the race, the ethnicity and the native language have a big impact in how we communicate with others. I leaned about the influence of sex and gender in the communication and how men and women communicate different. People also communicate different based on their religion and their social status. I learned ho people from different generations behaves different based on the events that happened during their generation. Communication can also be affected based on the type of you culture. If the culture is individualistic, there would be less communications as this culture as ...

Reflection Chapters 3, 9 and 10 by Arlys Morente

SPC1017-225-2990                                                   My reflection on Chapters 3, 9 and 10    Arlys Morente  By watching and listing to the presentations of my classmates I've was able to retain lot of important information I didn't know before. I had section 3-2 and 3-2b which were race and ethnicity. In my research I got to know more about race and the different cultures. Like race is usually associated with biology and linked with the physical characteristics of each person. Such as their hair texture  or skin color yet people of similar complexions or hair textures can be defined as different races.  And I also gathered information about ethnicity like that its a broader term than race. The term is mostly used to categorize different groups of people. ...

Christopher Rodas Group 1 reflection

After reading chapters three, nine, and ten, I have a clearer understanding of what this course will be about. It is not just about giving speeches but rather all these different things that play into how well we communicate in a variety of different setting. This will also play a huge rule how effective we are when giving a formal speech.    In chapter three, the authors focus on intercultural communication. The chapter focused on discussing the ways we can communicate cross culturally. We must first know what a culture is. Then, the differences between our culture and that of the person we are trying to communicate with. Once we know the differences, we need to understand how those differences will affect communication. Because each of us is so familiar with our own culture, norms, and values, we may feel psychological discomfort, culture shock, when it is disrupted. In the United States, there are dominate cultures, co-cultures, and cultural identities. Such as, race, ethni...

Reflection on Chapters 3,9 and 10

Reflection on Chapters 3,9, and 10 By: Amanda Caballero Through watching all the presentations, I've learned a lot of information to apply to my real everyday life. These chapters go inadept on topics like Intercultural Communication, Communicating in Groups and Group Leadership and Problem Solving. Intercultural Communication is something we deal with all the time. So many people have to communicate with other people from different cultural backgrounds for there jobs or in there communities. How do people develop intercultural communication skills? To develop that skill, you can start by learning about the culture by reading articles or books or listening to podcasts. There is some potential barriers that stop people from trying to learn the skill. Some barriers are Anxiety, Stereotyping, Assumptions and Language. Many people also find much difficulties in communicating in groups. There are so many different types of groups like Families, Friend groups, Virtu...

destinee dearmas - reflection 3,9,10

After sitting through the presentations and listening  , i retained a lot of information  on each chapter. My group covered chapter 3 "intercultural communication" which talks about communication between people. communication can be very difficult  because everyone has their own way of doing so. everyone is different whether if its by culture, race, ethnicity, gender,  disabilities, class level, age, and there are many more other classifications. After working on that chapter i have a better understanding why  people communicate the way they do . Everyone is different. listening to the presentation and reading the chapters after i was able to grasp a lot of information on "communicating in groups" .From chapter 9 i learned about the communication that goes on  between groups. A group can be anywhere from 3-10 people. There are four different pattern types depending on your culture and co-culture.  The way you communicate with your family reflects...

BLOG SPC - Gabriel Fernandez

BLOG          Throughout the presentations, I have learned a lot, so here is what I learned. The dominant culture is referred to as the learned system of norms that the majority group of empowered people holds in a society. I knew that in the 1960s, Immigrants changed their names to sound more "American." They were also expected to learn English faster than any other language. A health group is characterized by ethical goals, independence, cohesiveness, productive norms, accountability, and synergy. I learned that culture could be a cause of conflict. The culture forms the way we speak our mannerisms, the words we use, and more, and that can lead to conflict; it also shows one's identity. There are two types of norms: individualism norms and the other is collectivism norms. In the individualism norm, you are the center focus, but people around you are the center focus in collectivism. They know if a person's collective norm or an individualism norm can he...
