By: Amanda Caballero
Through watching all the presentations, I've learned a lot of information to apply to my real everyday life. These chapters go inadept on topics like Intercultural Communication, Communicating in Groups and Group Leadership and Problem Solving. Intercultural Communication is something we deal with all the time. So many people have to communicate with other people from different cultural backgrounds for there jobs or in there communities. How do people develop intercultural communication skills? To develop that skill, you can start by learning about the culture by reading articles or books or listening to podcasts. There is some potential barriers that stop people from trying to learn the skill. Some barriers are Anxiety, Stereotyping, Assumptions and Language. Many people also find much difficulties in communicating in groups. There are so many different types of groups like Families, Friend groups, Virtual groups, Service groups and Work groups. Every group comes with its own conflicts. Some groups are formed with people who share the same culture to decrease the chance of conflict. Virtual groups have become very popular this year due to lockdowns and this pandemic. There are a lot of different types of virtual groups like video chats, videoconferences, online social networks and computer conferences. Virtual groups are always improving and evolving all the time. How can you improve your virtual groups? In this chapter it lists you great tips to improve your groups like: Using the best from of technology, Making sure all members are both equipped to use the technologies, Develop and maintain social bonds and build trust, Develop group rules and Create regular opportunities to evaluate the technology they will be using. Being in a group is great but you should always make sure it is a healthy group. Healthy groups are full of trust, honesty and honorability. What is an interdependent group? This is a group in which members rely on each others skills to accomplish the group goals. Healthy groups are usually independent groups. What are some kinds of conflicts that can effect a group? Pseudo-Conflict occurs in a group when members who agree about a topic but due to miscommunication they believe they disagree. Another type of conflict is Issue-Related group conflict. This type of conflict occurs when two or more group members have different opinions about a topic. If all the members have different personality it can also cause conflict in the group. Chapter 10 is all about group leadership and problem solving. There are a couple ways to effectively work in a group to accomplish goals. Your team goals should always be shared, challenging and share a common purpose. Every group also has roles. Some of the roles are: Supporters, Interpreters, Harmonizers and Mediators. Supporters are who encourage others to give opinions through positive words. Interpreters are people who use their knowledge about different topics to help other members of the group understand each other. Harmonizers help resolve conflicts, every group needs a harmonizers. Mediators are people who help find mutual resolutions. These chapters show and teach people a lot of different ways to communicate correctly and how to manage a healthy group. I hope you learned a lot from my reflection about these chapters and can reflect this in your real life.
