Disability Project

Christopher Falcon Disability Project Summary In class we had the ability to listen to a few presentations that had to do with various disabilities, one being hearing disability. We learned about the parts of the ear that gives us the ability to use the function. The outer ear which is the pinna picks up the sound waves that are projected to the ear. Then in the middle of the ear, it is made up of three tiny bones, malleus, incus and stapes, These are responsible for the vibration to the ear drum and also the equilibrium of the body. The inner part of the ear is the last important part that allows the sound waves to be turned into information. Through the research that was talked about in the presentations it is know that hearing loss effects about 48 million people in the united states today. It can occurs through either direct from birth, through a traumatic experience, or developmental. About 2 to 3 out of every one thousand child in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears. Most of the time this occurs both parents have perfect hearing, it comes from the genes of the child by itself as a new gene. It is said to be that by 2050, every one out of ten people will have hearing loss. Some scientist believe that the technology such as AirPods and other headsets in video games are increasing the rates of hearing disabilities in the future. nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss and at least 700 will require hearing rehabilitation. The highest age range for hearing disability risk is 60-69 year olds that are affected the most. As times passes in our lives and we begin to age our hearing goes just as our eye sight does as well. Most people do not realize that this is happening to them because it occurs gradually. But for the people that begin their life with hearing disabilities such as children, they are taught sign language. Sign language is a visual language used without audio for these cases. ASL which is the American Sign Language is used in American for hearing impaired people and is taught to the families as well if need be. Untreated speak language disorders may have serious repercussions. Some being mental health issues and behavioral issues in children especially. Children that attend normal schools but have disabilities may feel left out by the other kids. It can cause them to have reading difficulties in class which can make them feel different from the rest. If this is a problem, there are also special schools for these types of disabilities. Throughout the presentations we are able to grasp the real meaning of being healthy and helps us notice how fortunate we are to be truly healthy. We have to look at life in another perspective and view their difficulties as if they are special in their own ways instead of different.

  1. Very good! I agree with that we should look at the disabilities as special instead of different. Great!
