Disability Project Summary by Amanda Caballero

Watching these different presentations have taught me so many different things about disabilities that are common in our community. We learn about different disabilities that people suffer with like; Hard of hearing, Speech Impairment, Autism, Brain Trauma and so many disorders that people suffer with every day.

We started off these presentations with learning about people who are deaf or have hard hearing. Something that is cool to start off with is the Anatomy of the ear. If you didn't know the ear is divided into three: External Ear, Middle Ear, Internal Ear. There is also 3 types of hearing loss. You can lose your hearing conductive which can be caused by trauma. You can lose your hearing Sensorineural which can be acquired or from trauma. Lastly, You can lose your hearing conductive and sensorineural which is called Mixed. There are a lot of tests you can do to always check your hearing. This presentation also shows the anatomy of speech which is also divided into 4 different parts. The 4 parts are Respiratory system, Phonatory system, Resonatory system and Articulation. There is so many different types of speech disorders in the world that causes people to not be able to pronounce different words. Speech disorders are most common one child out of 12. We also learned in this presentation two different types of sign language. The sign language we use in the United States is American Sign Language. Its a great way people can communicate to each other when they suffer from a speech disorder or have hard of hearing. This presentation taught me so much that I never knew!

The next presentation was all about traumatic injuries in the brain. A traumatic brain injury is an injury that affects how the brain works. What can cause traumatic brain injuries? Injuries come from falls, assaults, sport accidents or traffic accidents. Some mild brain injuries can cause headaches, dizziness, blurred vision or ringing in your ears. It can also cause vomiting or inability to speak.

We also learned about Autism. We first learned about the history of Autism. The first time the word "Autism" was in 1908 and the second time was in 1943. Boys are 5 times more likely to have Autism then girls. Alabama is the state that has the least amount of autistic kids and New Jersey has the most. There are so many programs and schools for kids who are autistic which is great for there development. Some autistic children deal with seizures, reduced muscle strength, language disorders, attention problems, sensory processing disorder and balance and coordination problems. These children also go through life in therapy to help them everyday. Some different therapies that help are cognitive-behavior therapy, relationship development intervention, and applied behavioral analysis. Some children can also suffer from learning disorders like dyslexia, ADHD, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia and Dyspraxia

I learned so much in these presentations and I hope you learned as well!
