Chapter 3, 9 and 10 Reflection by Diana Palacio
Communication plays a significant role in our lives; we live in a diverse world where we have to interact with a different type of cultures, sometimes it is hard to communicate with people that it is not the same as you or does not speak your language, mainly when you are working in groups, thanks to this three chapters we learned how we could improve intercultural communication and much more. Each type of culture differ from others; there is dominant cultures, co-cultures, and cultural identity these three different type of cultures helps individuals identify to what cultural group the person they are interacting with belongs, some cultures are going to affect intercultural communication like low content culture and high context culture, it can become challenging to build a good relationship with this two cultures, but it does not mean it is impossible. When belonging to a healthy group, communication and interaction seem easy. Healthy groups can be either independent, cohesive, accountable, synergetic. Holding each other accountable in a group is very important; it helps each individual successfully achieve the set goal. To be in a healthy group does not necessarily mean that the group is not going to have any conflict, an excellent example of good conflict is when two or more people in the same group have a good idea, but the group can only choose one idea, it is normal to experience this type of conflict however the leader of the group has to know how to manage the situation effectively, so that way good conflict does not end up turning to bad conflict, in every group communication is key, sometimes in groups, people misunderstand what others say in it turns to pseudo-conflict which it means fake concept since the individual takes it the wrong way, to not let this type of conflict happen you have to employ effective listening and expressing skills, it is normal to be misunderstood in groups where cultures differ, you just have to know how to manage it, do not let it become personal.
All three chapters connect with the other since they talk about how to understand people from different cultures and improve communication when interacting with diverse groups of people, having a healthy group, and knowing to recognize and solve a conflict.
Every group like your workplace, study groups, or any other group has a leader; A leader is a person that influences a group of individuals to have the same goal. Being the leader does not necessarily have to be the one that is in charge. There can also be informal emergent leaders, which are the ones that achieve different leadership functions within the group to make leadership more effective by leading individuals to different things to the same goal. Each individual in a group must have a task role; task roles help groups rapidly process information to complete the set goal. There are the givers, the ones that provide the content. The seekers, the word says it, seekers in a group look for an opinion on a piece of specific information so everybody can agree to it, and the analyzers, the ones that help the group understand hidden assumptions on their statements. In a group, it is always good to maintain a positive working relationship. To achieve that, each individual must have different roles like being the supporters of the group, the interpreters, the harmonizers, the mediators, and tension relievers. Each member must have its maintenance role in a group; it leads to a committed group.
Another type of leadership can be shared leadership; this type of leadership only works if every group member does their part. There are five keys to overcome shared leadership responsibilities that never fail;
- Always be committed to the group.
- Keep the discussion on track.
- Complete individual assignments.
- Encourage input.
- Manage conflict.
Following every chapter and these five key points will help improve your communication skills. You will never achieve perfection, but you can always achieve excellence by practicing and revising the way you communicate
Excellent reflection!! I wish I knew who to give the grade to.
